Anger Management Q & A

What is anger management?

Anger management is a structured program teaching you how to recognize your anger triggers, defuse your feelings, and handle situations in a positive way. Instead of bottling up your feelings or suddenly erupting, you learn coping techniques and assertive communication skills that help you calmly resolve your angry feelings.

Why would I need anger management?

You may not be able to control your anger for many possible reasons. You may have grown up in a difficult or abusive environment, turning anger into an automatic response that erupts throughout your lifetime.

Some people can’t manage their emotions because they lack impulse control. Without impulse control, you react quickly without thinking about the consequences, often leading to sudden excessive anger in circumstances that don’t warrant such a response.

You may have explosive anger or frequent angry outbursts due to a mental health disorder. Some disorders may lower your coping abilities; others are from an imbalance in areas of the brain that regulate emotions.

A few mental health disorders associated with anger management problems include:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Personality disorders
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Substance use disorder

Poor impulse control may also be linked with mental health conditions.

What signs indicate I need anger management?

Natalie and the IOP Mental Health team help many people when their anger becomes uncontrollable or occurs frequently enough to affect their life.

Signs that anger management or impulse control therapy may be right for you include:

  • Frequently getting into intense arguments
  • Engaging in or threatening physical violence
  • Damaging property (like breaking objects during an angry outburst)
  • Being in trouble with the law (due to your anger)

Losing your partner or friends because of anger is another sure sign you would benefit from anger management.
